About
We are Joe and Leah, the husband-and-wife team behind Dry Stone Habitats, based in Stroud, Gloucestershire and working across The Cotswolds.
Joe began his dry stone walling career in 2019 under the tutorship of two expert craftsmen in Stroud, where he grew up. He went on to undertake his professional training and certification with the Dry Stone Walling Association (DSWA), of which he is now an accredited professional member. Leah joined Joe in 2025 and we decided to launch Dry Stone Habitats together. Prior to dry stone walling, our backgrounds were in art history and architecture, and we met whilst studying at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London.Â
Â
At Dry Stone Habitats, we offer all dry stone walling services, undertaking small repairs, full rebuilds and the building of brand new walls. Whether your project involves a garden wall, boundary wall, field wall or retaining wall, we will be happy to help.
Â
The other side of our practice concerns dry stone walls and their ecological potential (hence our name!). Dry stone walls are fantastic habitats for all kinds of flora and fauna. Animals and insects, including birds, toads, stoats and butterflies make homes in walls, as well as lichens, moss and flowering plants.
Â
Our aim is to develop a new approach to dry stone walling in the UK. While all dry stone walls are good for nature, we believe they can be designed and constructed in ways that intentionally and actively provide habitats and enhance biodiversity, offering significant potential for rewilding and habitat regeneration.
